4th of July : Celebrating Independence Day in Vegas

The Fourth of Oh My!

Celebrating Independence Day in Vegas

The view from Lake Las Vegas on July Fourth
The view from Lake Las Vegas on July Fourth

Independence Day is America’s celebration and Las Vegas is the country’s party capital, so doesn’t it make sense to be in Sin City over Fourth of July weekend? Here’s a sampling of planned holiday happenings.
Mondays are always huge at XS Nightclub at Encore, being their industry night featuring top deejays, so — with July 4th falling on a Monday this year — expect a mega-bash. Both of the club’s resident deejays, Steve Aoki and Afrojack, will be spinning at this sparkling celebration. Aoki has been central to the emergence of the electro-dance scene, and his latest single, “Turbulence” (a collaboration with Lil Jon and Laidback Luke) has ignited the charts. Grammy winner Afrojack (for his remix with David Guetta of Madonna’s hit “Revolver”) has worked with everyone from Pitbull to the Black Eyed Peas, but still calls the XS deejay booth home.
Meanwhile, over at the swanky new Cosmopolitan Las Vegas, the Marquee Dayclub will feature Australian electro-house spinner Dirty South and Swedish deejay/producer Avicii by the pool on Saturday, July 2, and Brit hit-maker Fatboy Slim and friends on Sunday, July 3.
If you fancy a night of nostalgia — and have been wondering who your big sister (or even your mom) used to swoon over — legendary “boy bands” New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys will be performing together as part of their long-awaited “2011 NKOTBSB Tour” at Mandalay Bay Events Center on Sunday, July 3.
Being on the 64th floor, Mix Lounge at THEhotel at Mandalay Bay can deliver breathtaking views including multiple firework displays.
The Terrace inside PURE Nightclub at Caesars Palace is a hidden enclave with panoramic vistas.  Las Vegas’ largest year-round outdoor nightlife venue, the Terrace’s 14,000 square feet includes a dance floor, cabanas and theatrical lighting — and will put you in a primo position for the fireworks. Moon (the penthouse nightclub of the Palms’ Fantasy Tower) and the 55th-floor skydeck of ghostbar (also at Palms) are hard to beat for fireworks and celebrity watching.
For dinner with a view, First Food & Bar at the Palazzo, Japanese eatery Yellowtail at the Bellagio, Nove Italiano at Palms and the Monte Carlo’s Diablo’s Cantina all offer elevated eats. For a more laid-back fireworks experience, try the streetside patio of Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina at Miracle Mile Shops.
Though it might seem extravagant to actually book a suite from which to watch the fireworks, bear in mind that this allows you to save on cover charges in clubs and/or the need for dinner reservations by putting your feet up in comfort and privacy while enjoying the delights of room service. The luxury 180 Degree Suites at Four Seasons Hotel, for example, live up to their name with gasp-inducing views of the city skyline from the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard. Similarly, a Sky Suite at ARIA Resort & Casino at CityCenter offers unparalleled Strip sights through floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as first-rate room service from ARIA’s collection of celebrity-chef-powered restaurants.
If you’re really on a budget, McCarran International Airport makes a fine fireworks vantage point (seriously), with unobstructed views compensating for any lack of party atmosphere. If possible, drive to the top level of the nearby parking structure (indeed, many of the city’s taller open parking structures make great viewing platforms).

    • Gov. Andrew Cuomo signs marriage equality act
    • Same-sex couples can get married in New York within 30 days
    • The state Senate approves a same-sex marriage measure with a 33-to-29 vote
Albany, New York (CNN) -- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the state's marriage equality bill hours after it passed the Republican-controlled Senate on Friday night, making it the sixth state in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage.
Cuomo signed the bill into law after the legislature cleared the way to legalize same-sex marriage with a 33-to-29 vote, the first time a state Senate with a Republican majority has approved such a bill.
The new law, which will allow same-sex couples in New York to marry within 30 days, drew a sharp rebuke from opponents, who spent millions to try to defeat the measure.
"We worry that both marriage and the family will be undermined by this tragic presumption of government in passing this legislation that attempts to redefine these cornerstones of civilization," the state's Catholic bishops said in a joint statement released late Friday. It was signed by Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan and seven other bishops.

Opponents of the marriage equality law have vowed to take political action against any Republican who voted for the bill.
The Senate vote came after days of delays that included last-minute negotiations, passing by a slim margin with the support of four Republicans.
Cuomo credited four Republican senators who joined the majority of the state's Senate Democrats for the passage of the bill, saying they were "people of courage."
"I think it was politically more dangerous for a Republican," Cuomo told reporters late Friday. "The conservative party was threatening them with consequences ... and they did it anyway."
A vote on the measure, which the Assembly passed June 15, has been stalled in the Senate until Friday. But it turned a corner late Friday, according to Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, after lawmakers agreed on an amendment to protect religious groups from litigation that had been pushed by Republicans.
Earlier in the day, the Assembly passed a new version of the bill that included the amendment about religious institutions.
Cuomo said it would grant same-sex couples equal rights to marry "as well as hundreds of rights, benefits and protections that are currently limited to married couples of the opposite sex."
New York, which gave birth to the gay rights movement in the 1960s, will become the sixth state to allow same-sex marriages. Currently, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire and the District of Columbia grant same-sex marriage licenses.
Activists on both sides of the issue gathered in the state capitol, Albany. They chanted opposing slogans -- petitioning for either "marriage equality" or yelling "one man, one woman" in defense of the institution's traditional definition -- though they could also be seen occasionally mingling and even singing religious songs together.
Republicans, led by Skelos, had expressed concerns over the "unintended consequences" of a bill that redefines the legal parameters of marriage. The measure needed three Republicans' votes to pass the bill, which had the support of 31 Senators -- just one short of the number required for passage -- earlier this week.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who courted Republicans to approve the bill, called the vote a "historic triumph for equality and freedom."
"In recent weeks, I have had many conversations with our state Senators. I emphasized that not only is marriage equality consistent with bedrock American principles, but it is also consistent with bedrock Republican Party principles of liberty and freedom -- and the Republicans who stood up today for those principles will long be remembered for their courage, foresight, and wisdom. In fact, 10 or 20 or 30 years from now, I believe they will look back at this vote as one of their finest, proudest moments," Bloomberg said in a statement released shortly after the vote.

How many illegal immigrants live in the United States and where do they come from?

How many illegal immigrants live in the United States and where do they come from?

How many illegal immigrants live in the United States and where do they come from? origins of illegal immigrants.

It is impossible to say exactly how many undocumented immigrants are living in the United States precisely because no authority documents their entry into the country. (This is one reason why researchers like myself prefer the term “undocumented immigrant” to “illegal immigrant”.)
Researchers therefore use various techniques to make estimates (approximate calculations) of the size of the undocumented population. The best estimates that I am aware of come from the Pew Hispanic Center (PHC), a nonpartisan research institute based in Washington, DC.
In a report published February 1, 2011, the PHC estimated that there were about 11.2 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. in March 2010. This is down from an estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. in March 2007. Most analysts agree that economic recession in the U.S. explains much of the decrease in the undocumented population between 2007-2010.
To put all this in perspective, consider that undocumented immigrants make up about 3.6% of total US population.
Mexicans make up the largest share of the undocumented population, at about 6.7 to 7 million people, or 59% of the total.
Why do comparatively so many Mexicans migrate illegally?
Part of the explanation has to do with Mexico’s relative poverty and proximity. Mexico shares a 2000-mile land border with the United States. This border marks the largest income gap between any two neighboring countries in the world. The US-Mexico border is also something that meant much less in the past, and hundreds of thousands of Mexicans used to come and go between home and the US every year with relative ease until our immigration laws changed so dramatically in 1986. This long history as neighbors means that the border splits millions of Mexican and American families. As a result of the U.S-Mexico income disparity and our countries’ exceptional social, economic, and historical ties, a lot of Mexicans want to migrate to the US.
Another part of the explanation has to do with the fact that our immigration laws essentially treat Mexicans the same as just about any other nationality despite Mexico’s special status as a neighbor. That so many Mexicans compete with each other for such a small number of visas means that it’s virtually impossible for the typical Mexican immigrant to enter the country legally in his or her lifetime. With no way to enter legally, people make the difficult decision of migrating illegally.
In 2010, the US provided just under 180,000 visas to Mexicans for labor and family unification purposes. This figure is equivalent to just 2.7% the size of the undocumented Mexican population and 0.06% of total US population.
You can read more about the intricacies of our visa laws here.

Ending Illegal Immigration: A Risk-Benefit Analysis

Ending Illegal Immigration: A Risk-Benefit Analysis

Wait! Don’t build that fence along our southern border just yet. We may not really need it any more than we need one on the northern border with Canada. In order to fix the problem of illegal immigration we must first understand why we have an estimated 12 million illegals in the United States. A Risk-Benefit Analysis model provides insight into both the causes of the problem and the solution to it.
We all make risk-benefit decisions every day. “Should I have the apple or the cheeseburger for lunch?” Or, “Should I send a Tweet with a risqué photo of myself to that young coed?” Millions of people on our northern and southern borders face the decision to enter the United States illegally, but we don’t have a fence with Canada because we don’t need one. Canadians are not streaming into the USA demanding ice cold Molson beer and raising maple leaf flags in front of public schools. Why not? It’s simple: Canadians enjoy a good quality of life at home, so the perceived benefit in coming here illegally is not worth the risk.
But the same is not true for our southern neighbors. Life in Central and South America is…well…bleak. America sits like a shimmering jewel on the horizon where benefits abound: healthcare, education, citizenship, and jobs, to name a few. The risk in coming here is perceived to be low in comparison to the benefits to be had. So they come. Politicians puff out their chests, call it an outrage, and demand fences be built. Unfortunately, fences have never worked in the past. But we’re ignoring the obvious solution: end the benefits, ratchet up the risk, and we won’t need a fence for the same reason we have none with Canada.

Let’s look at some of the benefits we provide to non-U.S. citizens and consider some solutions:
    • Healthcare: By one estimate, as much as 40% of the healthcare that goes unpaid for in the U.S. goes to people here illegally. That’s a nice benefit. Medical providers should continue to provide care to anyone who needs it, but they should also be required to inquire about a patient’s citizenship. Those who are suspected of being here illegally ought to be turned over to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement following care.
    • Education: Current law requires that children of illegal parents receive a public education, and there are good arguments for providing it. But the practice only keeps a benefit in place, one that costs taxpayers billions of dollars each year. It may be time to rethink the law, and if faced with the prospect of no education in America, perhaps fewer non-citizens would risk coming here.
    • Citizenship: Long-term we need to repeal or change the 14th Amendment that gives citizenship to people born in the United States. Its original purpose has long-since ceased to be relevant, and the problems it sought to fix have been fixed. In the near term, we need to consider changing the 1965 Immigration Act which facilitates the permanent residency status of illegals who bear children in the U.S. Anchor babies have created an unintended humanitarian hostage situation, one that is a costly burden on taxpayers.
    • Jobs: It’s illegal to hire illegals, yet getting a job in America remains one of the biggest benefits to be had in coming here. We need to shift the focus away from rounding up illegals in the workplace to clamping down on those who employ them. By increasing the risk to employers (stiff fines and even jail time), they will be less likely to hire non-citizens. Surprisingly, the Obama administration appears to have started doing just that. It’s a good start.

If we were to eliminate the benefits to be gained by illegally entering the United States, while increasing the risk in coming here, we could solve the illegal immigration problem without a fence. These benefits are the causes of the problem, and their removal is the solution. Building the fence would only slow down the departure. We welcome legal immigrants, and we should reserve the benefits of citizenship for those willing to get in line and knock politely on the front door.

Hugh Hefner -- The Best Way to get over a Girl..

In a shocking turn of events, TMZ has learned Hugh Hefner is coping with his breakup with Crystal Harris by cozying up a to a new woman ... and she's a Playboy Playmate too! Didn't see that coming.

According to our sources, Hef has a new main girl -- Miss January 2011 Anna Sophia Berglund (above left). According to our sources, Anna has now moved into Hef's room and the two have taken to calling each other "babe" around other people. We're told during a recent movie night at the Playboy Mansion, the two were cuddling and kissing during the entire movie.

One source put it bluntly -- "It's clear Hef has moved on to Anna."

Sources close to Crystal tell us that while Anna was never singled out, the constant presence of girls around wore on Crystal and played a role in her decision to call it off.

Huffingtonpost: Playboy: Hugh Hefner Slaps Crystal Harris Playboy Cover With Scarlet Letter

Hugh Hefner Slaps Crystal Harris Playboy Cover With Scarlet Letter

Not so fast almost Mrs. Hefner. After Crystal Harris landed the cover of July's Playboy but lost her fiancé, Hugh Hefner, practically at the altar, the original Playboy isn't about to let her get away with it.

"Recent events call for a special sticker on the July cover. Look for it on newsstands," Hefner tweeted along with a shot of the new cover -- a large red sticker that reads, "Runaway Bride In This Issue" is plastered over his ex-fiancée.

Early Wednesday morning, Harris told her side of the story on Ryan Seacrest's radio show, much to the amusement of Hefner who would rather keep his musings to 140 characters or less.

"Crystal did an interview with Ryan Seacrest this morning to explain everything, but I still don't have a clue," he tweeted.

In the playfully bitter post-breakup war between Harris and Hefner, we definitely give the Lothario a few bonus points for this one.
