Huffington Post:US Cities Where It's Better To Rent Than Buy

Where It's Better To Rent A Home Than Buy: Trulia
Of the 50 most populated cities in the United States, New York remains the city where it's better to rent than buy. The Big Apple's competition? Fort Worth, Texas.
That's according to the recently released Q2 2011 Rent vs. Buy Index by Trulia, an online real estate resource. The site compares rent of a two-bedroom apartment with median list price of a home to create price-to-rent ratio. Using that ratio, they divide cities into three groups: (1) cities where it is beneficial to buy a home; (2) cities where the choice should be made on a case-by-case basis; and (3) places where renting is much less expensive.
According to Trulia's release, buying a home has become more affordable than renting an apartment in 80 percent of major cities. Besides New York and Fort Worth, only in Kansas city is renting the preferable option. Right behind those cities are Memphis, Los Angeles and San Francisco,.
On the other end of the spectrum, the majority of cities where buying makes sense are located in the Western United States. Las Vegas comes out atop the buy-here rankings, followed, in order, by Phoenix, Arlington, Miami and Mesa (Ariz).
Taken by itself, the price-to-rent ratio doesn't completely explains why a high-rent, foreclosure-addled city like Miami lands in the buy-here sector, while a city with low rents like Fort Worth is the second most friendly rentable city. As always, caveat rentor.
Below is the graphic visualizing the rent-to-buy ratios of fifty metropolitan cities:

London (CNN) -- Prince William of Wales slipped a gold ring onto the finger of Catherine Middleton Friday, and the couple vowed to love, comfort, honor and to keep each other in London's biggest royal wedding in three decades.

Bells pealed over central London and flag-waving crowds roared in excitement Friday as Middleton arrived at Westminster Abbey to marry William, the second in line to the British throne.

Middleton wore an ivory and white satin dress with lace sleeves and shoulders, designed by Sarah Burton of the Alexander McQueen fashion house.

A massive new mega mall planned for downtown Miami has local shoppers ready to spend and local politicians seeing dollar signs.
The massive Brickell CitiCentre consisting of more than five towers will rise from the land bordered by Brickell on the East, Southwest 1st Ave. to the west and between Southwest 8th and Southwest 6th St.
The complex will be bigger than the Dolphin Mall's 1.4 million square feet of retail space, bigger that Sawgrass Mills Mall -- in fact about double the size of Sawgrass -- at 4 million square feet.
"This is the biggest private works project in the U.S. this year, this is the biggest private works project in America," said Miami City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff. "It's going to bring Miami into the epicenter of retail shopping and that includes Coral Gables and even Aventura."
The project will create 1,700 construction jobs every year for the four years it will take to complete construction. When it's finished there will be 3,800 permanent full time jobs here.
And taxes will bring some $15 million to the city and county.
The City Centre will house not only retail shopping but office space, apartments or condos, and a hotel.

Restaurant operator Alex Pilat is hiring now, and sees a need for more workers and dollars signs. He just opened his sandwich shop right across from the site of the planned mega mall.
"It's going to be excellent," said Pilat. "It's going to bring more people to Brickell and give people here more choices."
"This is the biggest thing to happen in Miami in about 12 years," Sarnoff said.

Obama: 'We've got better stuff to do'

  • The White House says the issue is bad politics for the GOP, but is a distraction
John King gets Donald Trump's reaction to the White House releasing President Obama's birth certificate and whether Trump is really running for president. Tune in to "John King, USA" at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday.
Washington (CNN) -- The White House released copies of President Barack Obama's original long-form birth certificate Wednesday, seeking to put an end to persistent rumors that he was not born in the United States.
The certificate states, as Obama's advisers have repeatedly said, that the president was born at Honolulu's Kapiolani Hospital on August 4, 1961. Doubters insist Obama was born overseas -- possibly in his father's home country of Kenya -- and may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president.
"We do not have time for this kind of silliness," Obama told reporters at the White House. "I've been puzzled at the degree to which this (story) just kept on going."
"Normally I would not comment on something like this," the president said. But the country has "some enormous challenges out there" that it will not be able to effectively meet "if we're distracted."

Tuchman: 'Trump is wrong'

"We're not going to be able to (meet those challenges) if we spend time vilifying each other," he stressed. "We're not going to be able to do it if we just make stuff up and pretend that facts are not facts. We're not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by sideshows and carnival barkers."
Obama released a shorter, legally binding "certification of live birth" in 2008, but failed to persuade members of the "birther" movement.
The administration had to make a special request from the state of Hawaii to get the long-form certificate released, White House legal counsel Bob Bauer said. Typically, the state only releases the shorter, computer-generated live birth certification when people request such documentation.
Obama's personal attorney, Judith Corley, picked up certified copies of the long-form document in Hawaii and brought them back to the White House Tuesday evening, Bauer noted.
While the president has tried to make light of the controversy, the question has remained political red meat for some of his critics. A recent CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll showed that nearly 75% of Americans believe Obama was definitely or probably born in the United States. More than four in 10 Republicans, however, believe he probably or definitely was not born in America.
The U.S. Constitution says only "natural born" citizens can become president -- a vague clause that followers of the birther movement contend disqualifies Obama from the presidency, since they believe he was born overseas.
"The president believed the distraction over his birth certificate wasn't good for the country," White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said. "It may have been good politics and good (television), but it was bad for the American people and distracting from the many challenges we face as a country.
"At a time of great consequence for this country -- when we should be debating how we win the future, reduce our deficit, deal with high gas prices, and bring stability to the Middle East, Washington, D.C., was once again distracted by a fake issue," Pfeiffer said. "The president's hope is that with this step, we can move on to debating the bigger issues that matter to the American people and the future of the country."
Pfeiffer told reporters that the birther debate has been politically damaging to the Republican Party. Regardless, the issue remains potent in GOP circles. Potential Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently seized on the issue, saying he had doubts about the president's background.
Following the White House's release of the long-form certificate, Trump told reporters in New Hampshire that he is "very proud" of himself for helping to bring about the release of the document.
"I've accomplished something nobody else was able to accomplish," Trump said. "I'd want to look at (the birth certificate), but I hope it's true so that we can get on to much more important matters."
Obama "should have (released the certificate) a long, long time ago," he said.
Trump, a billionaire business tycoon and reality television star, blamed the media for repeatedly bringing up the issue. Trump, however, has frequently raised questions about Obama's birthplace during his climb in recent GOP primary polls.
Allegations that Obama was not born in the United States have been repeatedly discredited. A recent CNN investigation turned up no evidence to support the birther claims.
"This has long been a settled issue," said Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.
The president acknowledged Wednesday that the release of the long-form certificate won't satisfy a "segment of people for which, no matter what we put out, this issue will not be put to rest."
"But I'm speaking to the vast majority of the American people, as well as to the press," he said. "We've got better stuff to do."

Huffington Post: 10 Best Hotel Pools (And What To Eat While There)

PHOTOS: 10 Best Hotel Pools (And What To Eat While There)

There is nothing like arriving to a beautiful hotel with a grand lobby, plush accommodations, and multiple award-winning restaurants, only to find a pool that looks like it belongs at a Motel 6. To truly live in the lap of luxury, a pool should have an unforgettable view, should be heated to perfection, cocktails should be in abundance, and some kind of mosaic design doesn't hurt either. If a hotel is going to pay astronomical prices to have a pool, they should do it well.

These hotels have set the bar incredibly high. Boasting stunning views, private cabanas, bars, and year-round access, these are the gold standard of swimming. Whether on a family vacation, are with friends, or on a romantic getaway, there's a pool to fit every desire - party at the rooftop pool at the Standard Hotel in LA, gape at the view at Villa D'Este's floating pool in Italy, or enjoy the Art Deco design at the Raleigh's pool in Miami.

President and First Family attend Easter services

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Dressed in their Easter Sunday best, President Obamathe first lady, and daughters Sasha and Malia entered Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington Sunday to a standing ovation.

The first family attended the 10 a.m. Easter service, a rare public appearance at a church for the president.

Rev. Smith, the senior minister of the historic church, welcomed theObamas.  "It probably has not been lost on you that we have some very special visitors this morning... so we welcome President Barack Obama, Michelle, Malia and Sasha."

With his arm around his daughter Malia, President Obama sang along as the 120-member choir performed the introit, This is the Day, and an opening hymn. The service also included scripture readings from the Old Testament (Jeremiah 31:1-6) andthe New Testament (John 20:1-18).

During prayers, the Obamas were mentioned on two separate occasions. Rev.Smith told the president that about two years ago the church had decided to pray for him and the first family. "So, if you're feeling blue and all of a sudden you feel a little better, that's our prayers," he said.

Shiloh Baptist, one of the oldest African-American congregations in Washington, is not new to the large entourage and security that comes with apresidential visit. President Obama is at least the third sitting U.S. president to attend services at Shiloh.  Bill Clinton addressed the congregation in 2000, and President Reagan hosted "In Performance at the White House" at Shiloh on gospel and spiritual music, for the PBS television series. Dr. Martin Luther King also spoke at the church in the 1960s.

Shiloh was founded by slaves in 1852 in Fredericksburg, Virginia before Union soldiers helped move it to Washington.

President Obama does not attend Sunday church services on a regular basis; this is his fifth visit to an African-American church in Washington since he was electedpresident.

The Obamas stayed at Shiloh for just over two hours but left before service wasover, skipping the invitation to discipleship/altar prayer, achoral blessing and recessional, benediction, and organ postlude, according to the program.

The president and first family returned to the White House where they will spend the rest of the Easter holiday.
